Why Alex Sutton Started This Firm
I started Sutton Law years ago because I believe everyone who walks through our door deserves two things: a lawyer who genuinely understands their situation, and a clear, honest plan for how we’re going to resolve it. That’s not a slogan. It’s the reason we answer every email within 24 hours, take calls 5 days a week, and build a personalised legal strategy for every single client.
Today, our team has over 30 years of combined experience handling immigration, family, employment, real estate, and litigation matters across Ontario. We’ve helped hundreds of families reunite in Canada, protected employees’ rights, and guided clients through some of the most complex legal challenges they’ll ever face. And we still treat every case like it’s our most important one.
When it comes to immigration, we know that every application carries a personal story behind it and not just a paperwrork. For some clients, it means reuniting with family. For others, it’s the opportunity to build a safer and more stable future in Canada. We take the time to understand each client’s situation, explain the process clearly, and guide them through every step with honesty and care. Immigration law can feel overwhelming, but our goal is to make clients feel supported and informed from beginning to end.
In family matters, we work with people who are dealing with some of the hardest moments in their lives. Separation, parenting disputes, support issues, and financial uncertainty can take an emotional toll on everyone involved. We approach these cases with compassion, patience, and practical advice. Whenever possible, we look for solutions that reduce conflict and help families move forward, while still protecting our clients’ rights and interests.
In employment law, we help employees understand where they stand and what options they have when workplace problems arise. Losing a job, dealing with unfair treatment, or facing harassment at work can be stressful and deeply personal. We believe people deserve straightforward advice and strong representation during those moments. Our role is to help clients protect their rights and make informed decisions about their future.
Our litigation practice is grounded in preparation, responsiveness, and clear communication. Court proceedings and legal disputes can be intimidating, especially when clients are already under pressure. We make sure our clients understand the process, know what to expect, and feel confident that someone is advocating for them every step of the way. Whether the issue is personal or business-related, we approach every case with dedication and attention to detail.
At Sutton Law, we never lose sight of the fact that behind every file is a real person looking for answers, guidance, and support. That is the standard we hold ourselves to every day, and it continues to shape how we practice law.

How We Work: From First Call to Resolution
Step 1: Free Initial Consultation
We start with a free 30-minute consultation by phone, video, or in person at our Richmond Hill office. During this meeting, we listen to your situation, assess the strength of your case, and give you an honest evaluation of your options - including whether you actually need a lawyer. No obligation, no pressure. However, we are unable to provide you with the legal advice specific to your situation until and unless we are retained. During the initial consultation we hear your concerns and check if we are able to assist you.
Step 2: Personalised Strategy
If you choose to work with us, we build a legal strategy tailored specifically to your case. We identify every document you’ll need, map out your timeline, and prepare you for what to expect at every stage. You will receive a clear, written engagement letter outlining our fees, scope, and your rights.
Step 3: Preparation & Filing
Our team handles all documentation, filing deadlines, and correspondence with courts, tribunals, or government agencies. We review every submission with meticulous attention to detail because we know that over 70% of immigration applications are denied due to minor documentation errors.
Step 4: Advocacy & Resolution
Whether your case requires negotiation, mediation, a hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board, or a trial in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, we represent you with the same level of preparation and commitment. We keep you informed at every step and respond to all communications within 24 hours.
Don’t Let Legal Uncertainty Hold You Back
Every day you wait to address a legal issue is a day closer to a missed deadline, a lost right, or a preventable problem becoming much more expensive. Whether you’re facing an immigration deadline, a family dispute, or an employment issue - the sooner you speak with a lawyer, the better your options.

Client Stories: Real People, Real Outcomes
Commercial litigation
Denis and Leo, equal 50/50 shareholders in a closely held business, found themselves in a serious deadlock that threatened the continued operation of the company. Leo took the Company and excluded Denis from the operation. With trust broken and no workable governance structure in place. Alex assisted Dennis to bring the application to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for a receivership appointment. Through strategic lawsuit and negotiation alongside the court process, the matter ultimately resolved in a successful buyout of Denis’ shares, preserving the value of his interest n the company.

After negotiations and presenting a clear legal position supported by applicable law, Alex was able to secure a settlement of over $20,000 for Anna, allowing her to move forward in confidence.

Aisulu came to Sutton Law after her permanent residency application had been stuck in processing for over three and a half years with no response from IRCC. Alex Sutton initiated a Writ of Mandamus to compel a decision. Mr Alex is a very experienced, competent and knowledgeable lawyer. I highly recommend him for any immigration issue. He initiated a mandamus for the delay of my application for Permanent Residency and I received my PPR within a week after starting the process. Thank you so much for everything.
FAQ
How much does a consultation cost?
Your first consultation is completely free. We offer a 30-minute initial assessment by phone, video call, or in person at our Richmond Hill office. During this meeting, we’ll evaluate your situation and give you honest advice about your options - with no obligation to proceed.
What areas of law do you practise?
Sutton Law handles immigration law (including Express Entry, family sponsorship, work permits, refugee claims, and mandamus applications), family law (divorce, custody, support, property division), employment law (wrongful dismissal, harassment, human rights), real estate law, and civil litigation.
How long does the immigration process take?
Processing times vary depending on the application type and the current backlog at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). During your initial consultation, we’ll give you a realistic timeline based on your specific case and current IRCC processing data.
What if my case is complicated or has been refused before?
Complex cases are our strength. We regularly handle cases involving prior refusals, mandamus proceedings against IRCC, contested family matters, and multi-issue employment disputes. If you’ve been turned down elsewhere, we’re happy to provide a second opinion during your free consultation.
What happens if I’m not happy with your services?
We take client satisfaction seriously. If at any point you have a concern, we encourage you to raise it directly with your lawyer. If we cannot resolve the issue internally, all clients have the right to contact the Law Society of Ontario to file a complaint or request a fee assessment.
